I owe Edgar a lot. I arrived to Colombia to be with my girlfriend, without a word of Spanish and never having been exposed so fundamentally to a different culture. Edgar not only taught me Spanish with a mixture of patient encouragement and compassionate understanding, but also helped me navigate this world in which I found myself. His passion for the subject carried me along with it, even on days where I felt unconfident or overwhelmed. In time, he helped me write a beautiful marriage proposal so that I could express my love to my girlfriend in her own language, and then, later, a wedding speech that meant I could articulate that love to the people who meant the most to her. These are the hallmarks of someone who cares deeply about the subject and the people learning it. More than a teacher, he became my friend.
